South Africa

SPAR South Africa has six regional distribution centres, and the Build it (Imports) and S Buys distribution centres. Satellite warehousing hubs reduce transport costs on certain routes. SPAR has the most stores in urban residential areas in South Africa.

Distribution centres serve regions from a centralised location and usually consist of warehousing, cold storage and packing stations. Four distribution centres deliver to neighbouring countries. Nationwide, the Build it (Imports) and S Buys distribution centres supply building materials and pharmaceutical products respectively.

South Rand is the largest distribution centre in the group at 61 000m2. South Rand, North Rand and Lowveld’s inland distribution centres share a recently completed, consolidated, inland slow-moving warehouse, known as the ICC. Most of the distribution centres own some corporate retail stores or temporarily run stores under management contracts. South Rand owns and operates the majority at 30 retail outlets (excluding stores administered by our distribution centres).

The Build it distribution centre operates on the SPAR system and uses third-party distribution for deliveries outside KwaZulu-Natal. The S Buys distribution centre runs independently and has a national reach.

Our South African stores cater to community needs across all income groups. They are conveniently located and offer parking and access to public transport where possible. In South Africa, we have 2 349 stores in the following store formats:

for competitively priced, one-stop bulk shopping
for neighbourhood shopping
for everyday convenience
for forecourt convenience shopping
for liquor shopping
for rural and township markets
for home building requirements
for prescription medication and other pharmaceutical purchases

Switzerland

A state-of-the-art distribution and logistics centre in St Gallen handles the distribution to the SPAR Switzerland operations in German-speaking Switzerland.

The St Gallen distribution centre houses the central office function and handles the distribution of dry goods and perishables to our network of stores. Frozen goods warehousing and distribution are managed by a third party. Radio frequency, voice picking and fleet management technology improve productivity and efficiency in our business.
